EVERETT – A Snohomish County man has come forward as the driver who struck and killed a bicyclist on the 112th Street SE I-5 overpass Monday afternoon.
Everett Police Department Lt. Ted Olafson would not name the man, who walked into the department’s south precinct with his lawyer about 4 p.m. Tuesday. Investigators interviewed the man briefly, then let him go.
Olafson said investigators are still deciding whether to file charges.
“Given the man is local and is not viewed as being a flight risk, he was not arrested at the time of presenting himself,” Olafson said.
“His attorney indicated that the man was attempting to right a mistake.”
When the accident occurred, the man on the bicycle was westbound when he fell into the street and was struck by the car. The driver stopped, walked back to the scene, then drove away, Olafson said.
Everett fire personnel provided aid, but the victim died while being taken to a local hospital.
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office would not release the bicyclist’s name on Tuesday.
Police will examine the man’s car as they determine whether to file charges, Olafson said.
Olafson isn’t sure why the man waited so long to come forward. he man and his attorney didn’t call the precinct before they showed up.
Now that police know the driver’s identity, they will be able to investigate what happened more thoroughly, Olafson said.
“I’d say it’s a positive step in that it gives us the opportunity to truly understand all of what happened at the scene,” he said. “There are questions related to the collision that can probably only be answered by the man that was driving the car.”
