TACOMA — Police in Tacoma say a homeowner dodged a hatchet hurled by a would-be burglar, then shot the intruder in the shoulder.
The News Tribune reported that the Wednesday afternoon gunfire was the second time in two weeks that an intruder has been shot by a Tacoma homeowner.
Police spokesman Mark Fulghum said the unidentified resident was upstairs when he heard noises and called out. One of two intruders identified himself as a police officer so the homeowner went to investigate.
When one man hurled a hatchet and missed, the resident fired a shotgun and hit one of the intruders. Both men fled.
Fulghum said officers caught up with the wounded man when he sought treatment. They’re still looking for the second man.
On June 19, another homeowner shot and injured a 19-year-old burglar who was crawling through the window of a home.
