STANWOOD — Hoops for Davis, the city’s largest free indoor event, is a community fundraiser for Stanwood and Camano Island teens.
Hoops for Davis, set for 5 p.m. Saturday at Stanwood High School, also is a celebration of life, said organizer Garry Carlson.
Carlson plans to celebrate the life of his father, Jerry Carlson, who died in February, and his late son, Davis Carlson, for whom the fundraiser is named.
Davis was a fifth-grade student at Utsalady Elementary School when he died on Dec. 25, 2005, at the age of 11. During Davis’ fight with cancer, the community showed a lot of support, Carlson said.
As a result, the Carlson family started the Davis Carlson Memorial Fund, with a goal of bringing people together to raise money for Davis Place, an after-school hangout in downtown Stanwood.
The Stanwood Camano Resource Center, which manages Davis Place, hopes eventually to build a new community center especially for young people, Carlson said.
Hoops for Davis also supports an annual scholarship given to a graduating high school senior, based on his or her community service record.
Along with a series of basketball games that involves students and teachers, other activities at Saturday’s Hoops for Davis event include concessions, raffles, prizes, games and an auction.
The event attracts about 1,000 people every year, Carlson said.
