EVERETT — Help is coming for 15 homeless veterans in Snohomish County.
Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., announced Wednesday that 260 housing vouchers worth a total of $1.5 million in rent for a year will be allocated statewide to get Washington homeless veterans into housing.
This includes 15 vouchers that will be administered by the Housing Authority of Snohomish County.
The vouchers are part of a bill submitted by Murray, who is chairman of the Senate Housing Appropriations subcommittee and senior member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee.
“This is another critical boost for efforts to get homeless veterans in Washington state off the streets and into stable housing,” Murray said in a statement. “Each one of these vouchers represents a year’s rent for someone who has sacrificed for our nation but is now struggling to find housing. For too long homeless veterans have been forgotten heroes. Today’s announcement marks significant progress towards our goal of ending veterans homelessness by 2015 by providing all veterans with housing and the dignity that comes with it.”
Local public housing authorities provide rental assistance to homeless veterans while Veterans Administration medical centers offer support services and case management.
The city of Spokane was allocated 75 housing vouchers, Seattle and King County received 75 vouchers, Tacoma and Pierce County got 30, Walla Walla got 35 and Vancouver received 30.
