SALEM, Ore. — The state of Oregon would love to be able to give the Japanese dock that washed up near Newport this week to a port that could put it to use.
But Oregon Department of Parks and Recreation risk and safety manager David Solomon said Friday that bids so far show that would be way more expensive than knocking it apart on site and hauling it off for disposal.
Solomon says there is no federal help or insurance money to pay for this, so they have to find the cheapest alternative.
He says bids for towing the dock off the beach have been in the tens of thousands of dollars.
They are giving contractors until Wednesday to come up with some new and creative solutions.
