I got an email last month from someone with an unusual story idea. This person told me about a giant anchor he wanted to give the Anchor Pub — and he wanted to remain anonymous.
So much about this story could have gone wrong. At first we didn’t know how we could time it to be on hand when the owners first arrived at work. And what if they arrived and made stink faces because they didn’t want a 7-foot anchor?
I called the owners, Holly and Jeff Gibson, and asked if I could come by before they opened to talk about the history of the pub. They agreed. Photographer Mark Mulligan and I showed up early and crossed our fingers that they hadn’t beaten us there. The gift-giver had already positioned the anchor against the front door early that morning.
When the owners showed up minutes after us, they were touched by the gift, which turned out to be far cooler than the gift-giver had let on. Just don’t ask me for his name. I’ve been sworn to secrecy on threat of keel-hauling.
