MARYSVILLE — Construction of an overpass near the Lakewood Crossing shopping center is on track to begin in July.
Nine bids were received by the city to build the I-5 overpass at 156th Street NE, said public works director Kevin Nielsen. The project will link Twin Lakes Avenue on the west side of I-5 with Smokey Point Boulevard on the east side of the freeway. The city began advertising the project May 4 and opened the bids June 2.
“If you take the high and the low, we’re about 3 percent (apart) on bids, which is pretty remarkable,” Nielsen said.
He told council members at a meeting Monday night that the apparent lowest bidder did not include sales tax in their original bid amount. After learning about the error from the bidder, city staff recommended the council approve the second lowest bid. That bid of about $9.79 million was made by Guy F. Atkinson Construction.
Council members approved the recommended bid by a 6-0 vote Monday. Councilman Lee Phillips was not at the meeting.
“I’m really happy about the numbers and really glad to see this project move forward,” said Mayor Pro-tem Jeff Seibert.
The city approved a local improvement district in September that covers about a 2½-square-mile area on both sides of I-5. Property owners in the district are expected to fund half of the overpass project through assessments and the city expects to fund the other half of the project.
The total cost of the project was originally estimated at about $17 million but is now estimated at around $12 million, Nielsen said. The city started discussing the project in 2006, he said. Construction is expected to last one year.
