ARLINGTON — An object that was reported to be a possible explosive, forcing the closure of I-5, turned out to be coffee.
Washington State Patrol bomb technicians inspected the device and discovered that it was a container of coffee, trooper Keith Leary said. All lanes of northbound I-5 and the exit to Highway 532 are back open.
The exit was shut down for a couple of hours after a man reported that he might have a possible explosive inside his car.
The man told police that he was driving north from Everett and noticed something in the back of his vehicle. He said he sometimes leaves his door open and was concerned that the object might be a possible explosive, Leary said.
The driver pulled off the freeway and summoned police. Police shut down the freeway, along with the exit. State Patrol bomb technicians probed the object and found ground coffee.
It’s unclear why the man believed he was carrying an explosive.
