LYNNWOOD – A 35-year-old Mukilteo woman was killed Wednesday night when her car left I-5 in Lynnwood and ran into a trailer parked at a construction site, the State Patrol reported Thursday.
Shannon L. Mikkelsen died at the scene of internal injuries, state Trooper Lance Ramsey said. The State Patrol is seeking another driver in connection with the crash.
Mikkelsen was northbound in the left lane in a 1994 Lexus ES300 shortly after 8 p.m. when another car suddenly changed lanes in front of her, cutting her off, witnesses told police.
She swerved to avoid the car, went off the road and ran into a flatbed trailer used to carry machinery at the construction site, Ramsey said. After the accident, the other driver stopped briefly on the right side of the freeway, then left, witnesses told police.
It’s possible the driver did not see exactly what happened, Ramsey said. “We really don’t know at this point,” he said.
Witnesses said they did not believe the driver’s maneuver was a deliberate attempt to run Mikkelsen off the road, Ramsey said.
The car was a dark-colored, early 1990s sedan, witnesses said. They did not get its license plate number.
Ramsey urged the public to watch for license numbers when witnessing an accident. “That’s our best ticket to solving a collision like this,” he said.
