Idaho sues to stop poker games

SPOKANE — Idaho Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter and Attorney General Lawrence Wasden have filed a lawsuit to stop the Coeur d’Alene Tribe from offering poker at its northern Idaho casino.

The tribe planned to begin offering Texas Hold ’Em and Omaha poker on Friday at the casino, which is south of the city of Coeur d’Alene.

Otter and Wasden filed the lawsuit in federal court Friday, saying the tribe was in violation of the Idaho Constitution and the tribe’s gaming compact with the state.

Under the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, tribes can only offer games that are legal within the state where they are operating. The Idaho Constitution prohibits poker.
