Active Duty
Lt. Col. John Snyder, a graduate of Lake Stevens High School and Central Washington University, was promoted Oct. 1 to the rank of lieutenant colonel. Snyder serves as chief of the Enlisted Readiness Team for the 18th Airborne Corps, U.S. Army Human Resources Command. He is stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Adrian Alvarado graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. Alvarado is the son of Aileen and Jesus Alvarado, of Oak Harbor. He is a 2011 graduate of Oak Harbor High School.
Army National Guard Pvt. Adrian Elrod has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, South Carolina. Elrod is the son of Lisa Sears, of Lynnwood. He is a 2012 graduate of Aim High School in Snohomish.

The Marysville American Legion Post 178 will hold a flag retirement ceremony, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 14 at Jennings Memorial Park, 6915 Armar Road. People can bring flags for proper disposal, or observe the process. Donations for the food bank also are encouraged. More info: 360-653-0155.
To honor military personnel and their families, YMCA of Snohomish County family branches will be open to all military (active or retired) and their families for free to celebrate Military Appreciation Days through Nov. 14. Military ID is required.
In addition, the Marysville Family YMCA (6420 60th Drive NE) will offer a free Military Family Night, 4-7 p.m. Nov. 21. This special evening includes dinner, games, crafts, family swim time, dodgeball and more. All Active Duty, Reserve and National Guard families with current military ID are invited. Imagine Children’s Museum hosts a free admission night for families with military ID, 5:30-8:30 p.m. Nov. 14. The museum is at 1502 Wall St., Everett. All active, reservists and retired military are welcome. Military Family Night is sponsored by the Fred Meyer Fund.
The Snohomish County Music Project hosts “Veteran: An Art Exhibit and Reception” with visual artist and veteran Steven Markussen, 6-8 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Northwest Music Hall, located inside the Everett Mall. The event will also feature a veteran jam band led by the Music Project’s music therapy director Karla Hawley. Donations are welcome. The event is free and open to the public. The exhibit is on display through Nov. 30 and features paintings and sculptures on the veteran experience of returning home from war.
