Incumbent state senators representing Snohomish County held leads in their bids for re-election in early returns.
Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen, D-Camano Island, holds an early lead over her Republican challenger, former Island County planning commissioner Linda Haddon. Haugen is seeking a fifth term in the state Senate. Haugen, 67, represents the 10th District, which covers all of Island and parts of Snohomish and Skagit counties.
Sen. Val Stevens, R-Arlington, leads Democrat and former Sultan police chief Fred Walser in early returns. Stevens, 68, is seeking a fourth four-year term in the state Senate. The 39th District covers the eastern, rural half of Snohomish County, stretching from the northern to southern borders.
In the 1st District, which covers Bothell and vicinity in Snohomish and King counties, Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe holds a comfortable lead over Republican challenger Dennis Richter.
McAuliffe, 68, is seeking her fifth four-year term. Richter is an electrical engineer at Boeing making his first try at public office.
