In school districts throughout Snohomish County, the list of prospective school board candidates was narrowed Tuesday after the first batch of ballots was counted. Here are the races:
Marysville School District
It appears business owner Chris Nation and paralegal Heather Thweatt will spar in the Nov. 3 general election for a seat on the Marysville School Board.
Nation held 39 percent of the ballots with 2,658 votes for District 1. Thweatt was in second place with 32 percent, or 2,144 votes.
Mark Hatch, an evidence technician for the Tulalip Police Department, is trailing with 27 percent — 1,801 votes.
The seat is being vacated by Hatch’s godfather, Don Hatch, who opted not to run for re-election.
The possibility of school closures, declining enrollment and budget cuts have dominated debate on the race.
Monroe School District
Longtime Monroe School Board member Tom MacIntyre appears to have easily won a spot on the general election ballot. He’s ahead with 1,615 votes, or 44 percent.
MacIntyre, the retired director of the regional branch of Catholic Community Services, has held his seat for 13 years.
If early results hold, Monroe police officer Ryan Moody will also advance to the general election. He has 32 percent of the vote — 1,165 ballots.
With 780 votes, stay-at-home mom Janan Elnasser is in last place and will probably not advance.
Darrington School Board
In Darrington, where declining enrollment and budget constraints for the school district top the community’s list of concerns, Douglas Lenker and Jentry Wright advanced to the general election.
Lenker, a timber cutter, is leading with 175 votes. Wright, a caregiver, has 152 votes. Aron Harris, the assistant housing director for the Sauk-Suiattle Indian Tribe, is in third place with 97 votes.
Northshore School District
Northshore School Board member Sue Buske appears to have beat out three challengers and will have a spot on the general election.
If early results hold, she will face off against Julia Lacey.
Buske was ahead Tuesday night with 3,561 votes. Lacey trailed with 3,236 votes.
Arthur Hu had 2,117 votes and Jeff Wirrick was in last place with 1,594.
