BELLINGHAM — Six industrial tanks on the Bellingham waterfront are being reimagined as public art.
The Bellingham Herald reports an architect and a developer are trying to save the digester tanks at site of a former Georgia-Pacific pulp and paper mill from demolition.
The 65-foot-tall, 18 feet in diameter tanks are made from 1.3-inch-thick steel, joined together with large round rivets.
Architect John Reid imagines the industrial tanks have secret sculpture pieces hidden inside.
He thinks the tanks could be used throughout the waterfront to pay homage to the site’s history and maybe establish Bellingham’s version of Seattle’s Gas Works Park.
After natural gas put the Seattle plant out of business, the city bought the site and in 1975 it was opened as a park that incorporates industrial elements.
