Innocent plea to assault and eluding arrest

PAYETTE — Michael John Braae, accused of shooting a Washington woman and investigated in the deaths of four other women, pleaded innocent Friday to two counts of aggravated assault on a police and one count of eluding an officer.

Third District Judge Stephen Drescher set Jan. 22 for trial. Braae, 41, remained in the Payette County jail in lieu of a $1 million bond.

Braae is charged with trying to elude officers after he was discovered at a southwestern Idaho truck stop last month. He is accused of shooting at officers during a high-speed chase before jumping into the Snake River along the Idaho-Oregon line and unsuccessfully trying to swim to freedom.

Esteban Leon returned to the Yakima County juvenile detention center after appearing in Juvenile Court on Friday. Twenty-month-old Luis Acevedo died Thursday. "The 16-year-old, we believe, choked and punched the child," said police Lt. Mike Merryman. "He was mad. The baby wouldn’t stop crying. "Then he took the child to the mother and said, ‘Your baby stopped breathing.’ "
