Roger DeHart, a former Marysville School District biology teacher, became a nationally known figure in the public controversy by teaching a form of creationism before he came to Snohomish County.
While teaching at Burlington-Edison High School in Skagit County for 14 years, DeHart included intelligent design theory in his biology curriculum, which resulted in controversy with both the school board and the American Civil Liberties Union.
He came to Marysville in August 2001 to teach at Marysville-Pilchuck High School. There were no complaints about his teaching here, but the controversy followed him and school officials scrutinized his teaching materials and curriculum.
He resigned at the end of the 2002 school year to take a job as a biology teacher at a Christian school in California.
