EVERETT — A man was shot dead early Saturday morning in what appeared to be a home-invasion robbery.
The man and an accomplice reportedly had kicked in the front door of a house south of Everett shortly before 4:45 a.m., said Lt. Monte Beaton with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.
The intruders allegedly wore masks and were armed with pepper spray, Beaton said. They discharged the pepper spray and demanded money from people at the house along Gothic Way in the Eastmont neighborhood.
One of the roommates heard the commotion and came into the room, armed.
That man “believed he saw his roommates being held at gunpoint and he fired some shots,” Beaton said.
One of the intruders died at the scene. The other, believed to be injured, ran away. A police dog track was unsuccessful. No suspect information was provided.
As of Saturday evening, the sheriff’s major crimes detectives remained on scene and no arrests had been made.
People who live at the home were cooperating with the investigation, sheriff’s Lt. Scott Parker said.
“Guns were recovered from the scene,” he said. “Investigators believe this was a robbery attempt.”
The dead man’s age and other details were not made public Saturday.
Investigators also were checking with area hospitals to see if the wounded man sought treatment, possibly for a gunshot, Beaton said. They also had not yet determined if the intruders and the people at the house were known to each other.
