The Senate Ways and Means Committee met at 8 p.m.
Sitting at my desk, it looks like the Senate is trying to solve a couple problems with two pieces of legislation.
One of them is the bond for the capital budget. The House passed the capital budget but not a bond. That bill is among the pieces of legislation getting held hostage until other bills – most prominently the I-937 bill — are acted on.
The second bill of note deals with common schools – which is levies. I think this is the move to break the deadlock on House Bill 1776. That bill was a pretty clean measure when it left the House. But it came back with an amendment to shift $60 million out of levy equalization. This was to fix a problem in the budget bill. Republicans didn’t like the shift before. They have filibustered on this bill for more than an hour because they don’t want the House to concur in the amendment. And as I started writing this, the House set down HB 1776, adding to the intrigue and the possibility the new Senate bill will allow for the two items to be handled separately. > Give us your news tips. > Send us a letter to the editor. > More Herald contact information.Talk to us
