OAK HARBOR — A man was shot and killed by an Island County Sheriff’s Office deputy Sunday night.
The man allegedly had tried to carjack a man around 6:30 p.m. near the Safeway. The potential carjacking victim got away.
The suspect then went into the nearby Walmart, on the opposite end of a parking lot from the Safeway, and stole ammunition and tried to steal a gun. Employees said he brandished a knife.
He left the Walmart, encountered officers nearby and reportedly failed to comply with law enforcement commands before the deputy shot him.
The man was taken to Whidbey General Hospital and died. There were no other injuries.
The Skagit Multiple Agency Response Team, comprised of detectives from police agencies across Skagit County, is investigating the incident.
