MACHIAS — Searchers checking out a report of the possible crash of an ultralight aircraft or a hang glider Tuesday in the Machias area found several brightly colored balloons instead.
A woman in the 500 block of Russell Road reported about 10:30 a.m. seeing a large red object falling from the sky into the woods near the Pilchuck River, Snohomish County sheriff’s spokeswoman Jan Jorgensen said.
Sheriff’s personnel, Snohomish County Search and Rescue volunteers, and Lake Stevens firefighters searched, finding only the balloons.
Lacking any wreckage or any reports of overdue or missing aircraft, they called off the search about 12:20 p.m., she said.
"We feel it’s a good possibility the reporting party saw the balloons because they drifted in the air and then suddenly came down," she said.
Marysville
Fire victim dies: One of two men burned in a flash fire Monday died early Tuesday at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Jesse King, 47, of Marysville, suffered burns over 90 percent of his body. He died about 3:50 a.m.
His son, Jacob King, 20, also of Marysville, was listed in satisfactory condition Tuesday with burns over 10 percent of his body.
The two were installing a laminated wall covering in a bathroom at a home in the 14100 block of 51st Avenue NE when the pilot light from a gas water heater apparently ignited fumes from the cementing material.
The building’s owner established a fund to help her renters, Dan and Julie McCants, who did not have renter’s insurance. The company that insured the building, PEMCO, will contribute $5,000 to the fund.
Jesse King leaves behind his wife, Patty, four sons and several grandchildren.
