EVERETT — A 25-year-old Snohomish County jail inmate who tried to hang himself with a bedsheet improved from critical to serious but stable condition Tuesday, jail officials said.
However, they refused to release the name of the inmate. He was awaiting sentencing on charges of attempted murder and first-degree assault.
The man was being held in the jail’s maximum security unit but was not under suicide watch, and he had given no indication that he was a threat to himself.
He was discovered hanging in his cell around 8 p.m. Monday and was being treated Tuesday at Providence Everett Medical Center’s Colby Campus, jail administrator George Hughes said Tuesday.

Teen still in hospital: A 16-year-old boy who was shot in the face remained in serious condition Monday night at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
The boy was injured while he and another boy, also 16, were "fooling around" with a handgun, police said. He underwent surgery and was expected to undergo further surgery to repair broken bones in his face, Edmonds police detective Sgt. Mike Drinkwine said.
Police have not had a chance to talk to him, and the shooting, which is believed to have been an accident, remains under investigation, he said.
Investigators recovered five guns and arrested the youth suspected of firing the weapon on a warrant and an unrelated charge, Drinkwine said.
