KINGSTON, Jamaica — A Jamaican lawyer says gang leader Christopher “Dudus” Coke will soon be taken to the U.S. for prosecution.
Defense attorney George Soutar says Coke has waived his right to fight extradition and could be on his way to the U.S. within hours.
Soutar spoke to reporters Thursday after Coke made a brief first appearance before a Jamaican judge. Coke is charged with drug and weapons offenses in New York City and could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted.
He was captured Tuesday after a monthlong manhunt. The threat of extradition sparked a week of violence in May that killed 76 people.
