Dozens of passengers were injured – four seriously – when an EVA Airways flight from Taiwan was hit by turbulence Monday as it approached Tokyo’s international airport, a police official said. The turbulence occurred about 18 minutes before Flight BR2196, carrying 251 passengers, landed safely at Tokyo’s Narita airport, Kyodo News agency said. Narita police said at least 37 people were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of cuts and bruises. Police said most of the passengers on the Airbus A330-200 were unbuckling their seat belts at the time and thrown out of their seats.
Monaco: Prince’s health ‘worrying’
Doctors for ailing Prince Rainier III of Monaco said he was in stable but “worrying” condition Monday, breathing on a respirator and under sedation after dialysis halted the 81-year-old ruler’s deterioration. Rainier’s doctors said in an update that dialysis and other treatment had stopped the decline of his kidneys, lungs and heart. The medical update issued by the royal palace added that the health of Europe’s longest-serving monarch was “still worrying but remains stable.”
Venezuela: Cuban airliner crashes
The pilot of a Cuban airliner carrying 93 people aborted his takeoff Monday when an engine caught fire, sending the craft swerving off the runway and crashing. Officials said 16 people were injured but none seriously. The Cubana de Aviacion Ilyushin 18 was leaving Venezuela’s main airport near Caracas when a mechanical problem caused the fire, the airport’s director said. “The plane never took off. It could not reach the required speed for takeoff, forcing the pilot to try to keep the plane on land. But the runway ended,” he said.
