TACOMA — A judge says two months of jail time is sufficient punishment for a soldier who left his two preschool-age children alone in a squalid Tacoma-area apartment while he went to work.
Quintin Dublin was convicted in a bench trial of two counts of second-degree criminal mistreatment and jailed for two months before Wednesday’s formal sentencing.
The News Tribune reported that a deputy prosecutor asked for a sentence of 14 months, but Pierce County Superior Court Judge Vicki Hogan sentenced Dublin to time served. Hogan also ordered him to attend parenting classes.
Dublin is separated from his wife. She has the children now.
The children, then 3 and 4, were found last November in an apartment littered with garbage, dirty diapers, spoiled food and feces.
Court papers show Dublin told a defense psychologist that trying to be a single father while working long hours at Joint Base Lewis-McChord was overwhelming.
