Cline Jewelers has grown considerably since owner Andy Cline’s father opened the business 31 years ago. This year the neighborhood jeweler opened in a new storefront in downtown Edmonds and recently was voted the region’s best in a local radio station contest.

Q: How did your business get its start?

A: My father opened up Cline Jewelers in 1980 as a wholesale jewelry manufacturing business, making and repairing jewelry for other jewelry stores in the Northwest. Over the course of the years the focus has shifted to a retail storefront while offering the latest in technology and manufacturing of jewelry on-site.

Q: What convinced you that this was the job for you?

A: I knew jewelry was for me when I sold my first engagement ring; it was such a great feeling being a part of such an important chapter of a couple’s life together.

Q: What does it take to blend your passion with your livelihood?

A: Blending my business with home life is one of my biggest challenges. It is hard for me at times to turn off my work. It just takes a great family and friends that will listen to me and share all my new ideas for marketing or how to improve the store.

Q: What are the crucial elements of success for your business?

A: The store’s success is based on a great staff and working to really listen to what the customers want, no matter what their budget is.

Q: What has been your biggest challenge and how did you meet it?

A: The biggest challenge I’ve had was coordinating our recent move and major renovation to our current location in downtown Edmonds. The majority of the work was done in December, so that made for some really long stressful days. I got through this with a great contractor, architect and my father, who helped out with a lot of insight.

Q: What motivates you?

A: What motivates me on a daily basis are the amount of opportunities that are out there to increase our customer base. I love hearing new ideas that I can incorporate into the business and see how those directly link to increased revenue.

Q: What personal abilities do you think are needed to excel in this business?

A: To excel in this business I feel that you need to be capable of adapting to trends as well as be looking for ways to improve the customer experience.

Q: When you’re not working, how do you enjoy spending your time?

A: In my spare time I enjoy watching sporting events and spending time with friends and family.
