A judge Wednesday refused to overturn a Snohomish County jury decision, which awarded no money to an Edmonds police detective who alleged that the city mishandled her ongoing domestic dispute.
Ronda Rohde argued that the department did not properly supervise her former partner, a male Edmonds officer. She also claimed the city didn’t properly investigate her reports of domestic violence.
Superior Court Judge Ronald Castleberry turned down Rohde’s request for a new trial. The motion came following what Rohde’s Seattle attorney, Mary Ruth Mann, called an inconsistent verdict.
A jury on April 14 found that the city was negligent in supervising others in the department who made “horrible” comments about Rohde, Mann said. Jurors said the negligent supervision did cause Rohde harm.
However, the same jury said she was not entitled to damages in her civil lawsuit.
Castleberry on Wednesday said it was possible for the jury to conclude “her problems were independent from the actions of the city.”
Rohde was seeking more than $1 million in the original lawsuit. In court yesterday, her attorney said she was asking for more than $270,000 in direct costs and lost wages, plus an unspecified amount of general damages.
