OLYMPIA— A judge today granted a request to block tax-cut Initiative 722 from taking effect immediately.
However, the order issued by Thurston County Superior Court Judge Christine Pomeroy applies only to the nine cities and four counties who brought the case.
Other cities and counties could join the lawsuit; otherwise they’ll have to follow the law when it takes effect on Dec. 7.
The cities where the initiative has been blocked by the injunction are Seattle, Olympia, Pasco, Richland, Bainbridge Island, Newcastle, Des Moines, Carnation and Burien. The four counties are King, Pierce, Kitsap and Whitman.
The order puts implementation of I-722 on hold while the constitutionality of the initiative is challenged in Thurston County Superior Court.
Sponsored by Tim Eyman, I-722 was passed by voters at the November general election. It rolls back some 1999 fees and taxes, and limits property-tax growth to 2 percent a year or the rate of inflation, whichever is lower.
