PORTLAND — A federal judge has blocked Portland schools from suspending a student lacrosse player for violating the drug and alcohol policy.
The Oregonian reports Wilson High School administrators said the 17-year-old gave another student $10 to buy alcohol for an upcoming party.
His parents said the discipline was based on inconclusive text messages between students off school grounds and after school hours. The boy said he changed his mind the next day about the party and got his money back.
Judge Michael Simon issued a temporary order Tuesday against the 28-day sports suspension, saying administrators might not have had sufficient evidence.
Simon said he was concerned in part about potential “irreparable harm” to the student and his family if he is unable to play in games that college scouts might attend.
