MOUNT VERNON — A much contested environmental impact statement on a proposed oil unloading facility in Anacortes will go forward after a judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by Shell to stop it.
The Skagit Valley Herald reported that Skagit County and Shell have been locked in battle over the proposed Shell Puget Sound Refinery since April 2014.
Skagit County was not going to conduct an environmental impact statement, saying there were no adverse impacts as a result of the project. However environmental groups appealed the decision and an examiner decided a statement was required.
Shell then sued the county, alleging the examiner acted illegally and that the matter was out of his jurisdiction. A judge ruled Thursday this was not the case and dismissed the suit.
Representatives from the Shell refinery could not be reached for comment.
