BARING – A base jumper fell 1,000 feet to an apparent death Monday night when the jumper’s parachute did not open after a jump off a cliff or mountain near Baring in east Snohomish County.
The accident occurred about 8:25 p.m., Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Jan Jorgensen said. Late Monday, search-and-rescue volunteers still had not recovered the body, which was on a ledge.
The remote area made recovery by foot difficult, and police would probably have to use a helicopter today, Jorgensen said.
The victim, who is believed to be a man, is assumed to be dead, she said. The victim was one of four people who were base-jumping at the site.
