EVERETT — A Snohomish County Superior Court jury is still mulling how much a Mount Vernon man and his family should receive after a malfunctioning medical device burned his heart and made it useless.
The panel has been deliberating for more than two days after a five-week trial in the case of Paramjit Singh and his family, who are suing Edwards Lifesciences Corp. of Irvine, Calif. The injury happened during heart bypass surgery at Providence Everett Medical Center.
Singh received a heart transplant but is beset with other illnesses because of anti-rejection medication he must take.
Edwards manufactures a monitor that had a line of computer code that shut off fail-safe devices and caused a catheter inserted in Singh’s heart to reach temperatures up to 500 degrees.
Edwards admits responsibility and is willing to pay what it calls a reasonable amount but contends Providence also should pay. The hospital also is suing Edwards.
Singh’s lawyers asked the jury to award more than $35 million to him and his family.
