Kaia Hefferman, Meadowdale High School
As the cliche goes, Find happiness in the little things. Throughout high school most of us have enjoyed the little things, the spirit days, the football games, the yaki burritos, we have all spent time with our friends on sunny days or have gone on spontaneous adventures. Finding joy in the little things is what can bring you the most happiness.
A lesson my aunt shared with me this past year was the most important lesson I have learned in my high school career, maybe even more important than the French revolution. She has taught me how to be a happier person through focusing on the small things that can cheer me up, like an adventure through Target or getting taquitos from Pecado Bueno, rather than the big things that will often bring me down. My high school life has not been butterflies and rainbows just like so many other’s, I have been through a lot from my home life, and in the big picture, it is a dizzying amount of stress…often overwhelming to think about. But through it all my aunt is my biggest supporter and can always show me the things I can be happy about, whether it be getting accepted to college, getting a better job, or something as simple as shopping for towels, she has supported me through it all. I have learned that there may be no immediate reason in sight, you simply have to look harder for a reason to smile.
The little things in life truly make you the happiest, and help push you through the difficult situations in life. Our lives are just now beginning. We are leaving here with our diploma, and starting our lives as adults. Some of us are heading off to college in a few short months, and others may be starting their careers. Whether you know what you are doing after today or not, this is the beginning of the rest of our lives. The rest of our lives I can promise will not be butterflies and rainbows, and through the ups and downs of your lives, I hope you can always think of the little things, because that’s what matters the most.
Congratulations class of 2017, I hope all of you continue to find happiness and remember to find a reason to smile.
