SEATTLE — Federal officials say the historic Washington ferry Kalakala is a hazard to waterway navigation and has told its owner to provide plans to tow it from its berth in Tacoma.
The Seattle Times says the Coast Guard and the Army Corps of Engineers are deciding whether to remove or anchor the boat, among other options. Officials say it would cost millions of dollars if the boat should sink and block access to the Port of Tacoma.
Steve Rodrigues says he sold the Kalakala to an anonymous buyer, but the Coast Guard believes Rodrigues is the owner.
The ferry sailed on Puget Sound from 1935 to 1967. It later became a fish processing ship in Alaska. It was towed back to Washington in 1998 with the idea it would be restored, but no one came up with the money.
