Kalakala gets moral support, but nothing else

PORT ANGELES — The City Council gave a qualified endorsement Tuesday night to a private campaign to restore the art deco ferry Kalakala.

The council voted 5-2 for a resolution that expresses emotional support for the efforts of ferry owner Steve Rodrigues’ Kalakala Alliance Foundation. But it emphasizes that the city will not provide any money or lend its name to fund-raising efforts.

Rodrigues has said that the city’s blessing would help him in seeking grants and loans from public and private sources to fund the vessel’s three-year restoration, estimated at $13 million to $15 million.

West Richland: Dog attacked with paintballs

Police are searching for someone who may have attacked a bulldog with a paintball gun. Rick DeVleming said his dog Ollie got out of his collar on April 22 and went looking around his neighborhood, where he and his family moved three weeks ago. At one point, the 4-year-old dog became a paintball target. Veterinarians said the dog was permanently blinded in his left eye and badly bruised in the testicles, which might prevent him from being able to reproduce. DeVleming had hoped to breed the dog.

Lakewood: Soldier

surrenders in homicide

A Fort Lewis soldier turned himself in Wednesday, saying he had committed a homicide, a Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman said. The soldier’s 28-year-old wife was subsequently found dead, apparently from homicidal violence, in an apartment here, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said. The woman’s 9-year-old son was picked up from school and taken into protective custody. Authorities were trying to locate relatives in Ohio, Troyer said. No identities were released Wednesday afternoon.

Bellevue: Vandals

destroy flags, poles

Gordon Muschett was proud to put up a flag and flagpole at his home last year to honor an Army buddy who was killed 50 years ago during the Korean War. Now he’s angry. Last week, thieves cut Muschett’s flag from its halyard, broke the 20-foot pole from which it flew and dug up the lights that shone on the flag at night. Muschett was not alone. Late Thursday and early Friday, vandals hit at least four residences in southeast Bellevue, stealing flags and destroying poles. The losses were estimated at $100 in each instance. "It’s not the monetary value. It’s just the way they tore the flag down, cutting it away. That bothers me the most," Muschett said.

Bellingham: Guilty plea in assault-for-hire case

A man facing murder solicitation charges for trying to hire a hit man to kill a deputy prosecutor pleaded guilty to a lesser charge Wednesday. Amandeep Singh, 27, pleaded guilty to solicitation to commit assault. He had been charged with solicitation to commit murder. Singh also pleaded guilty to possessing 50 pounds of cocaine. In June 2003, while out of jail appealing an earlier drug conviction, Singh was arrested by Bellingham police and accused of trying to sell the cocaine. Court documents say while Singh was in jail, he offered fellow inmates money to kill deputy prosecutor Craig Chambers, who had prosecuted him in the marijuana case.
