STANWOOD — Golf fees are now higher on Fridays and weekends at Snohomish County’s popular Kayak Point Golf Course.
Golfers now pay $42 to play 18 holes on those days, an increase of $5 per round. Golf cart rentals are $13, up $1.
“We’re full on most weekends,” county parks director Tom Teigen said. “It’s a gorgeous course.”
Kayak Point is owned by Snohomish County and the higher fees help pay for park improvements, Teigen said. The course’s popularity with golfers puts about $200,000 a year into the county parks budget, he said.
The course is on 260 acres between the Tulalip Reservation and Stanwood. There are no parallel fairways or nearby homes.
The fees are staying the same — $27 for 18 holes — for golfers Monday through Thursday, Teigen said. Studies showed that local golfers using the course on weekdays wouldn’t likely stand for a fee increase, Teigen said.
The course boasts new golf carts with GPS tracking devices that help golfers measure their yardage, said Kathy Blumenstein, general manager of Kayak Point Golf Course. She works for Access Golf, which runs the course on behalf of Snohomish County government.
She also oversees the Willows Run course in Redmond, where golfers eschew the gas-powered carts and wait in line for a GPS cart.
“That way don’t have to buy a yardage book,” Blumenstein said. “It shows how far out from the green they are, and has the pin placements on it — all the information.”
Kayak Point got the new GPS golf carts in November, but with the glacial-speed retreat of winter weather they’re only now getting more use, Blumenstein said.
Talks are under way between Access Golf and the Tulalip Casino that might create golf and gambling packages at the casino’s new hotel.
The County Council is scheduled to adopt the higher fees on Wednesday. Blumenstein said the higher fees went into effect April 15.
