MARYSVILLE — Dennis Kendall was leading in the race for Marysville mayor Tuesday night.
In early returns, he had outdistanced opponent NormaJean Dierck in the race to replace Mayor Dave Weiser, who did not seek re-election after 12 years in office.
"It’s still early," Kendall said. "I’m very pleased with the results at this point. The supporters are there and we’re ready to go to work.
"My first plan is to get up to speed on what’s going on within the city."
Dierck, 45, a homemaker and former City Council member, ran on a platform of limiting growth, better planning and controlling city spending.
"My supporters are still optimistic," she said.
Kendall, 60, a retired businessman, pledged to work to make the city operate more like a business, improve communications and accountability, and promote improved economic development.
Dierck served on the council from 1998 to 2002, when she was targeted by a citizens group that opposed her stand on environmental and growth issues.
Kendall attends council meetings and has been active in the community in an effort to improve the city’s image.
Three City Council positions were unopposed: Jeffrey D. Vaughan, seeking an unexpired, two-year term in Position 1; incumbent John Soriano, seeking re-election to a four-year term in Position 5; Lee Phillips, seeking a four-year term in Position 6; and incumbent Lisa Vares, seeking re-election to a four-year term in Position 7.
