GRANITE FALLS – The Granite Falls Boys &Girls Club may have found a home, albeit temporary.
The Granite Falls School Board has given the go-ahead for the club to use a portion of the middle school parking lot, Superintendent Joel Thaut said.
“I think the board has always felt that the Boys &Girls Club should be part of this community,” he said. “If there’s some way we can help, that would be great.”
Negotiations still must take place between the school district and club officials.
The outcome will likely pave the way for a temporary, portable building for the club to use in the parking lot.
It is still unclear when the club might be able to move in.
Club spokesman Paul Seely said the organization will work with community members to find the right portable structure.
The club is wary about spending nearly $60,000 for a portable that might be used for only a year, he said.
He said it might be better to find a less expensive solution as an interim measure.
The club lost its lease in the city-run community center this year. The group was scheduled to move out of that building at the end of the summer, but an accidental fire in June forced the club to move out early.
Some children have been attending summer programs at the Lake Stevens Boys &Girls Club.
Seely said he doesn’t know how quickly a deal can be worked out and whether all the pieces will be in place for the Sept. 5 start of the school year.
Still, he welcomed the agreement.
“It’s good news,” Seely said. “At least we’ve got some movement and some of it favorable.”
