SEATTLE — A former King County jail bookkeeper has been charged with stealing money from inmates on work release.
William Findley is facing 22 counts of second-degree theft. Investigators allege that $28,000 in checks sent to the county for work performed by inmates never made it to the inmates’ accounts, and Findley was the bookkeeper who handled those transactions.
Charging papers say dozens of checks and money orders were found in Findley’s desk at work, representing $12,000 that was never deposited into the accounts of inmates.
Findley is set to be arraigned March 2. It was not immediately clear if he had obtained a lawyer.
The King County Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention says it has changed how it manages work-release funds to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
