King County voters may be asked to raise taxes

SEATTLE — If state lawmakers don’t pass a transportation package that helps King County, leaders say they’ll ask county voters for tax increases to maintain bus service and road repairs.

King County Executive Dow Constantine announced a possible vote Tuesday for an election in April. It would add a $60 vehicle fee, raise the sales tax by one-tenth of a cent and raise some Metro bus fares.

KIRO-FM reported the measure would raise about $130 million a year. About 60 percent would go to preserve 74 bus routes that otherwise would be eliminated. And 40 percent would go toward maintaining county roads and bridges.
