A Snohomish County judge has ruled that King County will have a choice of two versions of the same King County initiative on the ballot in November.
Judge James Allendoerfer said the wording of the original initiative – to reduce the number of King County Council members from 13 to nine – must go before the voters. In addition, the judge said he will allow a second version that the council approved in July.
The council’s version would allow the reduced size, but not until 2007. The original Initiative 18 called for the reduced council size in 2005.
Several proponents of the original initiative sued after the council’s July 18 changes.
Among them was Mukilteo tax opponent Tim Eyman, who said the council changes amounted to a “naked, self-serving political act.”
Eyman is one of the I-18 backers who disputed the council changes. The initiative garnered the signatures of 71,000 registered voters in King County.
