ELLENSBURG — The Kittitas County fire marshal is proposing a ban on sky lanterns because of their potential to start fires.
Sky lanterns are like little hot air balloons that float away with an open flame.
Fire marshal Brenda Larsen told the Daily Record the county has been lucky sky lanterns haven’t started a major fire. She’s asking county commissioners for a ban that could bring violators a $500 fine.
Larsen says sky lanterns are becoming popular due to movies and TV. She said they’ve already been banned in Tennessee and South Carolina.
