LYNNWOOD — A cultural complex catering to the Korean community won’t hit the auction block Wednesday because the center and an affiliated church settled most of the back taxes owed to Snohomish County.
Until this week, Morning Star Korean Cultural Center’s property on 18th Avenue W, north of Lynnwood, had been at risk of being sold at the county treasurer’s annual tax-foreclosure auction. About $83,000 in unpaid taxes and penalties had piled up since 2008.
The center and Bethany Korean Church on Monday paid the county nearly $49,000 for taxes due in 2008 to 2010, the Treasurer’s Office reported.
The center won’t owe anything for the years after that, because the state Department of Revenue ruled last week that center has qualified for property-tax exemptions for 2011 to 2014. The law only allowed the state to review the most recent three years.
The center includes a preschool and halls for traditional ceremonies, as well as rehearsal space for music and dance troupes. A library is under construction.
