EVERETT – The Everett City Council Wednesday evening unanimously elected Councilwoman Marian Krell as council president.
The council voted 6-0, with Krell abstaining, to make her council president for the next year. Krell takes over the presidency from Arlan Hatloe.
Krell thanked the other council members and said, though “it might be crazy,” she was looking forward to serving as president.
“It reminds me of the first time I got on a roller coaster,” Krell joked. “I just want to tell you all to hang on.”
Her colleagues congratulated her, some wishing her well and others expressing confidence in her leadership.
After making an unsuccessful run for the council in 1999, Krell was appointed to a vacant council seat in late 2002. The seat was left open when former Council President Frank Anderson replaced Ed Hansen as mayor.
Before becoming a councilwoman, Krell served eight years as director of Everett’s Office of Neighborhoods. Before that, she worked for McKesson Drug Co. in several capacities, including promotional account manager and independent drugstore manager.
A lifelong Everett resident, Krell graduated from Everett High School in 1956 and has served on several community boards, including the Everett Park Foundation Board and the Arts Council of Snohomish County.
She won the national Neil Harlan Award for community service in 1992.
