EVERETT — U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich brings his long-shot campaign for the presidency to Everett this morning.
The four-term Ohio Democrat will address a state Democratic Party breakfast at 8 a.m. at the Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel, 3105 Pine St. The breakfast is 7:30-9:30 a.m. Tickets are $35, available at the door.
Kucinich, known for his fiery economic populism and opposition to the war in Iraq, is expected to be the only Democratic presidential candidate to visit Snohomish County before Saturday’s caucuses.
Kucinich planned to focus much of his speech on Iraq, said his Washington state campaign spokeswoman, Patty Kuderer. Later today, he will speak in Redmond, Seattle and Spokane.
Kucinich has not received more than 5 percent of the vote in the nine states that have held primaries and caucuses. But his liberal message may gain a more receptive audience in Washington state, where Kucinich has raised more money than in any state other than California and New York.
On Wednesday, Kucinich vowed to continue his campaign, predicting in a statement that he will win the nomination at the July Democratic National Convention in Boston based in large part on his strong opposition to the U.S. military presence in Iraq.
"As the (candidate) field continues to narrow, the sharp differences between myself and the acknowledged front-runners will become more obvious, and will clarify why I am still in the race," he said.
Meanwhile, voters who consider themselves Democrats can find the location of their precinct caucuses either through the state Democratic Party Web site at www.wa-democrats.org, or by calling the county election’s department at 425-388-3444. You also may call county Democratic Party chairman Kent Hanson at 425-252-2305.
Democrats will gather 10 a.m.-noon Saturday at dozens of locations around the county.
Republicans will hold their caucuses on March 9.
