LAKE STEVENS — The Cascade Sprint is coming to Lake Stevens April 24.
The city will host the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference Championships for the third time, with up to 12 schools competing to be the fastest team to glide across the scenic lake.
The local contest will include Divisions II and III of the championships, as the city’s reputation for providing "good water" to aqua sports continues to grow. Last year, the regatta drew more colleges than the lake could accommodate.
Lake Stevens has become increasingly popular with local rowing clubs as well. This year, the Lake Stevens Rowing Club will conduct a series of small regattas, said Karen Alessi, a City Council member who brought the college regatta to the lake.
"We’ve really stepped up the effort this year. We started it two years ago with Western (Washington University) and Gonzaga, but we’re doing a whole season this year," she said.
In addition, the city again will host the Dannon Duathlon and Triathlon July 24-25.
The Northwest championships include small colleges on the West Coast.
While crowds gather around the lake shore to watch the regatta, the city will enhance the celebration with Village Fest, the downtown area’s annual small festival. There will be educational and community booths and food vendors with a variety of wares 10 a.m.-3 p.m. centered in front of the Lake Stevens Police Department at Cove Park.
