LAKE STEVENS — The brother of a star baseball player from Lake Stevens was killed Sunday while supporting U.S. military operations in the east African nation of Djibouti.
U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Dustin L. Canham, 21, died from what the Defense Department called “a non-hostile incident” while serving with a reserve unit based in Portland, Ore.
The circumstances of what happened were not announced. The Marine Corps said the incident is under investigation.
Canham was assigned to Marine Forces Reserve’s 6th Engineer Support Battalion, 4th Marine Logistic Group.
The Marines are in eastern Africa supporting military operations against terrorism and conducting humanitarian projects in the region. Marine officials were not available to say when the unit deployed to eastern Africa.
He was the brother of Mitchell Canham, who starred for the Lake Stevens baseball team and went on to help Oregon State University go to the College World Series three times.
In addition to his brother, Dustin Canham leaves a wife, a father and other family.
