LAKE STEVENS — The Lake Stevens City Council is considering renaming a street for a local trooper who died in an on-duty collision earlier this year.
A resident suggested the idea in June, City Administrator Jan Berg said.
Washington State Patrol motorcycle trooper Sean O’Connell, 38, died May 31 while working traffic-patrol duties related to the Skagit River bridge collapse.
O’Connell lived in the Marysville and Lake Stevens area.
The city has no policy in place for renaming streets, though it does for parks, Berg said.
The council is expected to discuss the matter in the coming weeks.
The resident suggested naming a street or a school district building, or adding O’Connell’s name to the city’s war memorial.
“He was just trying to throw ideas out on how to honor a community member,” she said.
The council is interested, she said. They need time to work on the details.
State officials plan to name the new bridge in Skagit County after the trooper.
As of last week, the collision remains under investigation, according to a Washington State Patrol spokesman.
