LAKEWOOD — Animal control officers in Lakewood are getting stun guns to protect themselves against dangerous animals — and pet owners.
The News Tribune of Tacoma reported that the Lakewood City Council voted this week to give the two officers authority to carry the devices, which will cost about $1,600.
The animal control officers previously have had to call police to help with capturing aggressive or threatening animals, but that means the police aren’t available to respond to more pressing calls.
Pierce County and the cities of Federal Way and Tacoma also allow animal control officers to carry stun guns.
