LAKEWOOD — The Lakewood School Board will have to appoint a new member after no one filed to run for a vacancy this fall.
Whoever is chosen will replace incumbent Ellen Phillips, who was appointed to the board in 1996 but opted not to run for a fourth term.
“I’m not sure what prompted me to accept the position of director of district No. 2, but it has been a wonderful learning experience for the last 13 years,” she wrote in a resignation letter that will take effect Nov. 30.
No candidates filed for the position, which represents the southeast portion of the district.
Whoever is chosen can serve until fall 2011 at which time the appointee can run for the balance of the four-year term, which expires in 2013. Phillips’ resignation takes effect after the November general election.
“She wanted to complete her full term,” said superintendent Dennis Haddock. “She is a consummate professional.”
The resignation letter, written July 8, gives the district a chance to start the application process now.
“By submitting her resignation now, that gives us the latitude to find someone who might be interested, given the fact that we didn’t have someone file,” Haddock said.
The board plans to interview applicants in late September or early October.
The district hopes to avoid a repeat of what happened in 2004 when it took nearly five months to find someone willing to serve on its board. Lakewood used newsletters, press releases, its Web site and three mailings to residents in the part of the school district left without board representation. Three people finally came forward and Jill Leonard was appointed.
