RENTON — A spectacular fire that broke out Tuesday night in a five-story apartment complex under construction in the Highlands neighborhood of Renton sent up a smoke plume visible for miles.
Renton Fire Chief David Daniels told KCPQ-TV he was not aware of any injuries from the fire. Ten to 15 nearby homes were briefly evacuated as a precaution; the complex itself was unoccupied.
Smoke from the fire was visible from both Interstate 90 and Interstate 5 in the Seattle area. Hundreds of people crowded nearby playfields to watch and take photos.
Renton firefighters and fire crews from elsewhere in King County responded to the multiple alarm blaze. By nightfall, Daniels said crews were focusing on “making sure the fire is out, and starting the investigative process.”
He said the complex had been roughly 50 percent completed.
